Bird Watching Season around DPS Tapi

Successfully completed the Bird watching sessions this season with the young Birders of the DPS Birding Club. Thoroughly enjoyed the company of these budding birders and tried to answer all the outstanding questions they had while trying to teach them how to identify the numerous birds around Surat. We identified over 50 birds including many migratory ducks, cranes and other birds. For details regarding the DPS Birding Club please visit our club blog www.dpsbirders.net

Shakespeare Festival-2018-19- Auditions

Dear Students of Class-IX-DPS Surat,

Further to our discussion of Shakespeare’s play, King Lear, below is the speech which you should learn and come prepared for the first round of auditions which will be held after your mid-term exams. (Exact date and time will be given by your class teacher). King Lear’s speech is for boys and Goneril’s speech is for girls. Remember, no reading. You must know your lines:

ACT-II-SCENE-4

KING LEAR:

O, reason not the need: our basest beggars
Are in the poorest thing superfluous:
Allow not nature more than nature needs,
Man’s life’s as cheap as beast’s: thou art a lady;
If only to go warm were gorgeous,
Why, nature needs not what thou gorgeous wear’st,
Which scarcely keeps thee warm. But, for true need,–
You heavens, give me that patience, patience I need!
You see me here, you gods, a poor old man,
As full of grief as age; wretched in both!
If it be you that stir these daughters’ hearts
Against their father, fool me not so much
To bear it tamely; touch me with noble anger,
And let not women’s weapons, water-drops,
Stain my man’s cheeks! No, you unnatural hags,
I will have such revenges on you both,
That all the world shall–I will do such things,–
What they are, yet I know not: but they shall be
The terrors of the earth. You think I’ll weep
No, I’ll not weep:
I have full cause of weeping; but this heart
Shall break into a hundred thousand flaws,
Or ere I’ll weep. O fool, I shall go mad!

ACT-I-SCENE-3
(The Duke of Albany’s palace.)

Enter GONERIL, and OSWALD, her steward

GONERIL
Did my father strike my gentleman for chiding of his fool?
OSWALD
Yes, madam.
GONERIL
By day and night he wrongs me; every hour
He flashes into one gross crime or other,
That sets us all at odds: I’ll not endure it:
His knights grow riotous, and himself upbraids us
On every trifle. When he returns from hunting,
I will not speak with him; say I am sick:
If you come slack of former services,
You shall do well; the fault of it I’ll answer.
OSWALD
He’s coming, madam; I hear him.
Horns within
GONERIL
Put on what weary negligence you please,
You and your fellows; I’ll have it come to question:
If he dislike it, let him to our sister,
Whose mind and mine, I know, in that are one,
Not to be over-ruled. Idle old man,
That still would manage those authorities
That he hath given away! Now, by my life,
Old fools are babes again; and must be used
With cheques as flatteries,–when they are seen abused.
Remember what I tell you.
OSWALD
Well, madam.
GONERIL
And let his knights have colder looks among you;
What grows of it, no matter; advise your fellows so:
I would breed from hence occasions, and I shall,
That I may speak: I’ll write straight to my sister,
To hold my very course. Prepare for dinner.

Astronomy Camp at DPS Tapi on 25th December

Had a great time telling the story of the universe to the grade 7 & 8 students of Delhi Public School Tapi. Under the clear skies of DPS Tapi on the outskirts of Surat it was a real treat interacting with enthusiastic young minds who had so many questions about the Universe they were part of.

‘King Porus-Legend of Ancient India recited by DPS Tapi Students

‘King Porus-Legend of Ancient India’ written by the poet Michael Madhusudhan Dutt was recited by DPS Tapi Students at Sanjeev Kumar Auditorium on the 24th of December. It was a mesmerising performance by the students. Great effort executed to perfection. It was directed by Dr. Sanjukta Sivakumar, Principal of the School. I am happy that I was part of the production and helped in many areas including voice training for delivering their lines and also mixing of the music for the recital. It was worth all the time I had put into this. Special thanks to Mrs. Archana Bhasin who was part of the production.

Birds Around DPS Tapi : Great Egret

The Great Egret looks very attractive in this photo because of the odd combination of colours.  Observe the green lores (vivid turquoise-green) above the intense black bill. Also note the legs are pale red. This happens for a short period when in full breeding condition. Normally the bill is deep black, with contrasting blue-grey or lime-green lore, and the legs are also black (including the feet) but with yellow on the tibia, down to  and including the ‘knees’. By late summer, orange or bright primrose-yellow starts to appear on the bill base, gradually increasing in size so that by autumn the bill is completely orangey-yellow, remaining this colour throughout the winter. It is very interesting observing these relatively common birds in Surat.
